I’m a college student studying communications and planning to go into marketing. However, I’ve grown increasingly concerned about the state of marketing jobs as AI continues to advance. I don’t want to start a career that will be replaced by AI in 10 years. I’ve read other posts on this subreddit where many replies suggest companies will eliminate lower-level positions and replace them with AI, while skilled, higher-ranked jobs remain safe. How am I supposed to advance in this career if I can’t even start it due to entry-level jobs being automated? I genuinely love this field, but I also want a stable job until retirement. With the rapid pace of AI advancement, I’m uncertain about having that in marketing. Any advice or insights?
If you’re afraid of AI, I don’t recommend marketing since advancements in technology are ongoing and involve adaptation. In my career, I’ve seen how computers, CRMs, and social media have transformed the field over the years, including AI. Many jobs will change, but those who adapt and learn to use new technologies always find new opportunities. Marketing is far from the only sector affected by AI; almost every field is impacted by evolving technologies.

This is a good one. No need to be scared of AI.
As a lifelong marketer, I spend a lot of time keeping up with AI. You’ll need these skills for any job moving forward.

AI won’t take your marketing job. Marketers who utilize AI will.

It’s ironic how people overlook the truth about a shrinking labor demand with this argument.
Someone has to use the AI. Worst case scenario, that can be you. Focus on the best-case scenario that excites you until you drown out the fear-mongering voices.
My favorite term in marketing automation was “there’s nothing automated about automation.” It means someone has to run the show. Gain experience now and work with the tools while also learning business skills. Marketing requires constant learning and adapting.

Definitely worth reading this; it’s simple and straightforward.

Thanks, mate!
Focus on developing skills that complement AI, like data analysis, strategy development, and creative thinking, which are less likely to be replaced. Understanding data and crafting compelling marketing campaigns will set you apart. Stay updated on trends to position yourself for roles that need human insight and strategy.
@Taran
Couldn’t agree more.
It’s like wanting to swim but being afraid of water. AI isn’t something to fear; it’s a utility.
Use fear as a motivator. Fearing AI is similar to a carpenter fearing the hammer. It’s not the hammer that takes jobs; it’s the carpenter who learns to use it well.
It depends on the type of marketing. Graphic design roles may be at higher risk of automation. Many marketing roles require human intuition. As an analyst, I was automating my own data tasks without AI. The job market is changing quickly; focus on what excites you and adapt.

Well written! I work in hospitality marketing and share your sentiments about AI’s impact.
Don’t be afraid! I’m in marketing, and AI is easy to grasp. Experiment and you’ll find your footing.
AI has been around since the early 2000s. It won’t replace critical roles, just modify them.
Marketing will always be in demand; it will evolve and become more challenging. Follow your passion!
Thanks for all your input! You’ve eased my worries, and your analogies are fantastic!
