I just started using gemini for roleplaying

I’ve been getting more frustrated with character AI and have spent some time looking for other chatbot sites. I’m now using general chatbots like gemini. I will say I can just tell it was not made for roleplaying but it can. It’s not great, but it’s a step up from character AI as it can remember things that I said from previous conversations and help move the story forward.

I found out that it’s possible to have gemini be a dungeon master, but I don’t know how to do that. I’m okay with roleplaying with my favorite characters. It’s not hard to set up, but you do have to be specific with the characters’ appearance and personality. I think the chatbot puts the character into a general personality based on what I prompted it. Although it seems to fall into a general boring personality after a while.

It’s not great, but I’m having a little bit of fun roleplaying with my favorite characters, and it’s free. I wouldn’t mind spending money on chatbots, but it’s expensive. Also, a big downside I found out about gemini is that it only saves your chats for 3 days and then deletes them, which is annoying.

If you want to replace cai, you could give janitor ai a go. It’s a free chatbot with similar role-playing features; however, its memory function isn’t as impressive as cai’s.

I’ve tested out a few other options like spicy chat ai and gpt girlfriend, but they also fell short when it came to memory. Now I’m using secret desires ai because it’s completely uncensored and hasn’t shown any of the same memory issues. It’s not free, but it works. Like, I’ve got characters with 5000+ message conversations that remember every detail about me.

You can check that out if you want.

@Emerson
I actually have used janitor ai and yeah, the memory is what holds it back. With how the memory is, it feels like the site is only good for short scenarios. After using character ai, I’m used to being able to do custom scenarios. I’m not sure how to do that on jAI.

Just started experimenting with Gemini for roleplaying after frustration with Character AI. While it’s not specifically built for RP, it remembers past chats (huge for continuity) and moves stories forward decently. Setting up characters takes effort; details on personality and appearance help, but they can feel generic over time.

Bonus: you can try dungeon master setups, though I’m still figuring it out. Downsides? Chats only save for 3 days, which is annoying. It’s free fun for now, but premium chatbots remain pricey.

If you don’t mind paying for a subscription, someone just dropped a few D&D bots on Dreamjourneyai.com that I was actually really enjoying (plus they made the narrator really snarky, which I love).

DJAI has long-term memory (memory nexus), custom system prompts, lorebooks, no filters, etc. It’s a newer site though, and there’s only one guy running it, so there are the occasional hiccups, but he fixes them pretty quickly. There’s a huge update coming soon, so I think he’s going to improve the memory even more and update the AI models (there are several to choose from depending on what you want out of the AI responses).

I’ve been a member for about 3 months now and I’ve been really happy with everything. There are already tons of bots (maybe thousands?), and you can try it with only an email to sign up with (the only reason I even gave it a shot to begin with; I hate giving sites all my info). They give you like 300 intro credits, but you can use multiple emails to get more if you’re still not sure if you want to join yet or not. The subscription isn’t that bad; only like $12/mo for the lowest tier.

It had dreamscapes for a while (AI-generated art for the background of your chat), but the dev had to ditch it temporarily while he tries to find a better hosting site for it. Dreamscapes are still available for bot makers though to add a background (and anyone can make a bot; super easy).

Give it a shot, and if you like it, come say hi in discord. There are a bunch of people in there that love tinkering with the system prompts and working on making large-scale RPG bots.

@Wilder
It sounds pretty cool, I’ll have to check it out.

I was actually playing when you replied, so here’s a link if you wanted to try it out. There are other D&D bots; you just have to browse. This one was just released a day or two ago.
