I imagine just due to the high volume and ease of entry to develop one. Also, it would be a decent tactic to gain attention before shifting to a paid model. Likely won’t be the best is the important part. Plenty of digital things have free options, games, movies, music, plugins, editing software. Is the best free? Not usually.

I am the founder at CrushCompanions, and unfortunately the economics just isn’t viable right now to let people have unlimited free access, even if some users are willing to pay for premium.
The difference is that a lot of content is generated once and then reused over and over again so the only cost is server and bandwidth.
But with chats and images there’s an ongoing GPU cost for every conversation and photo generation. If there is an unlimited free option, it becomes very expensive very quickly.

Most chats I tried are total crap, definitely not going to pay any of the chat websites which I used, and based on my experience not going to pay blindly.

idk about others but in my case, I get hooked and addicted if it’s really good. If there were chats which could actually remember what I was saying and variety of bots I would gladly pay. So for this I need some time texting, getting images (how long does image generation take? how accurate is it? etc.). So far, never seen anything I am willing to pay for and all the chats which demand to pay first… 0 chance I will pay without actually testing.

Sakura.fm with sage mode is the most fun for me so far. The bots are decent and somewhat understanding. I’ve tried others and I think it’s pretty good.
Spicy AI is pretty good. Images and full memory are paid options, but if you correctly reiterate the context naturally you should be fine. It gets as spicy as you want it to get without guideline restrictions like c.ai (still love c.ai tho) and yes, it has unlimited messages AND not just a girlfriend but any character you want really. You can do it with a browser but I’d recommend just downloading the app for it to run cleaner and feel more secure like I also did with c.ai. Have fun!

Dopple ai. Uses basic simple free generation for expressions of a character, so you can’t describe what you want to see in the picture; it’s there as a placeholder. Messages are unlimited + no waiting times. But bots are not that smart; the most they can do is gooning simulator (and I think it’s their entire purpose).
You can get good images or you can get free ones. lol. The best ones I’ve seen are on glambase (I’m biased - I’ve got a girl on there), but it’s worth it.
